Taipei, Dec. 8 (CNA) Taipei, Dec. 8 (CNA) President Chen Shui-bian received a group of foreigners Monday who helped the country with its democratization.
The president thanked them for their contributions to the country's democratization even though they suffered deportation and jail at the hands of the government, pointing out that but for their help, the country would not have progressed so far so fast.
Chen described his guests as witnesses who give the lie to claims made by the preceding KMT government that the Republic of China under its rule was a free country.
The foreigners were invited by the Taiwan Foundation for Democracy to attend a two-day seminar on human rights timed to coincide with International Human Rights Day, which falls on Wednesday.
