Taipei, Dec. 13 (CNA) President Chen Shui-bian said Saturday that the government has a plan to help Taiwan's farmers and fishermen sharpen their competitiveness in the world market.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of a two-day trade fair in Taipei sponsored by the Council of Agriculture (COA) of the Executive Yuan, Chen said the government will spend NT$2.2 billion over three years to help farmers and fishermen transform their production and marketing methods.
It is the responsibility of the government to take care of farmers and fishermen, he said, adding that the government will help them promote their products in the world market.
The COA opened the trade fair Saturday on the plaza in front of the Presidential Office in Taipei to promote the sale of agricultural products.
