Taipei, Jan. 30 (CNA) President Chen Shui-bian inaugurated an innovation, research and development (R&D) model zone in Tainan, southern Taiwan Friday and expressed the hope that it would help upgrade the local industry.
Addressing the inauguration ceremony, Chen expressed his appreciation to the 23 domestic and foreign enterprises who have signed agreements with the model zone administration to set up R&D centers.
Chen said that the investments will help create an excellent innovation and R&D environment in southern Taiwan and upgrade the local manufacturing sector.
He also thanked Vice Premier Lin Hsin-i for planning the establishment of such a model zone when he served as minister of economic affairs.
