Taipei, Feb. 4 (CNA) New Paraguayan Ambassador Ramon Antreo Diaz Pereira presented his credentials to President Chen Shui-bian in a ceremony at the Presidential Office Wednesday.

Chen extended a warm welcome to Diaz upon his arrival to take up his Taipei assignment.

Noting that the ROC and Paraguay have maintained diplomatic ties since 1957, Chen said the bilateral relationship is based on the shared values of freedom and democracy. "Geographic distance has not hindered our friendship and cooperation because we have a shared belief in freedom and democracy," Chen said.

Chen also expressed his gratitude for the actions of Paraguayan President Nicanor Duarte, who has on many international occasions spoken out for Taiwan's cause, including its bid to regain a seat in the United Nations.

For his part, Diaz said he feels honored to be able to work in Taipei. During his tenure, Diaz went on, he will do his utmost to further boost exchanges and cooperation between Taiwan and Paraguay in various fields.
