2003-07-05

Taipei, July 5 (CNA) President Chen Shui-bian on Saturday credited the Hsinchu-headquartered Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) for Taiwan's leading place in the world in the manufacture of chips and mother boards.

Speaking at a ceremony marking the 30th founding anniversary of ITRI, the president said the institute deserves a major share of the credit for the island's miraculous economic development.

The technology developed by ITRI has been employed by many local firms which have created a combined revenue of more than NT$2.2 trillion (US$63.21 billion) , not to mention the many talented industrial leaders who cut their teeth on high-technology as ITRI staff.

Chen lauded the institute's role in developing biotechnology and naontechnology and its marvelous achievements compared to its limited budget and investment in the fields.

He urged the 30-year-old institute to keep churning out new technology to help strengthen the competitiveness of the country's industry.
