The Presidential Office Holds the Dr. Sun Yat-sen Monthly Forum
2004-02-16

Taipei, Feb. 16 (CNA) At a time when "having value" has become a standard asset for people in today's society, strengthening one's own value has thus become the key to sharpening one's competitiveness, prolific writer Eric Wu said Monday.

In a speech delivered at the regular Dr. Sun Yat-sen Monthly Forum held at the Presidential Office, Wu -- a charismatic writer, song lyricist and renowned social activist -- shared with government officials the secret of creating one's own value.

People find their true value when they feel "useful" and "happy," Wu said, adding that a person's "true value" lies in understanding others and being able to satisfy their needs.

Wu said that having the ability to communicate well is also necessary for one to be successful, adding that being able to understand and feel other persons' feelings is a prerequisite to having good communication skills.

He added that a person's "value" cannot be displayed through showing off, but rather through interacting with and understanding others.
