Taipei, March 5 (CNA) President Chen Shui-bian called for the country's university students to live out the spirit of "Taiwan's son" when he presided over the opening of the 2004 Universiade Friday in Taichung, central Taiwan.
Speaking to some 10,000 athletes from 160 universities and colleges around the country, the president said the country's competitiveness depends on the high quality of its people, which means physical fitness and a sharp mind.
Athletic excellence on the track and field will not only arose the public's interest in sport but will also glorify Taiwan and boost the public's patriotism, Chen said.
Sport also helps players to learn about sportsmanship, which is to compete fairly and honestly, give winners hearty congratulations and turn failure into stimulus for more progress, the president said.
