President Chen Receives the Re-election Certificates
2004-03-30

Taipei, March 30 (CNA) President Chen Shui-bian received a certificate confirming his election as the Republic of China's 11th-term president in a ceremony held at the Presidential Office Tuesday. "This certificate looks light, but for me, it is extremely heavy. It is not just a certificate of election. It is like a signed note containing my promise to the 23 million people of Taiwan," Chen said after receiving the certificate from Central Election Commission (CEC) Chairman Huang Shih-cheng.

During his second four-year term, Chen said, he will make every possible effort to deliver on his campaign promises to "unify Taiwan, stabilize cross-Taiwan Strait relations, reinvigorate the economy and promote social stability and harmony." "I'm grateful for the support of the electorate and I'll live up to their expectations. I won't disappoint them," Chen said.

He also expressed his heartfelt gratitude for all the election staff for their devoted services. "We jointly wrote a new chapter in Taiwan's history through this hotly contested election," he added.

During Tuesday's ceremony, Huang also presented a certificate to Vice President Annette Lu confirming her re-election.
