Taipei, May 6 (CNA) President Chen Shui-bian chatted with a group of exemplary mothers over tea Thursday in his office as a prelude to Mother's Day, which falls on Sunday.
The president exchanged views with the mothers, according to a press release issued by his office.
He also lauded the mothers for their contributions to the country in his personal on-line paper Thursday, saying that they have played a perfect role in an increasingly diversified society, which poses exacting challenges for mothers.
Noting that there are many mothers who are have-nots and need help from the government, the president said his administration is introducing a set of laws to provide mothers with more job opportunities as well as better medical care and other protection.
Chen promised that his administration will strive to build a "safe haven" for all mothers in Taiwan.
