Taipei, May 25 (CNA) President Chen Shui-bian expounded on the virtues of his ideas of constitutional reform laid out in his inaugural address May 20, saying a reconstituted guide to governance best serves the interests of the people of Taiwan.
Meeting at his office with a group of representatives to the World Taiwanese Congress, Chen said his inaugural address was a carefully crafted document in which every word was chosen after being critically examined.
Noting that some of his followers have complained that the president strayed from his campaign promises in term of constitutional reform, Chen said he understands their feelings but the vision of his address represents the fact that he has an open mind to whatever reforms may be proffered to win the support of any political opposition, thus facilitating the introduction of changes to the ROC Constitution.
As leader of the country, Chen said he has to juggle various political forces at home and overseas, and balance ideals against reality. "The more we accommodate different ideas, the less opposition we will face in carrying out constitutional reforms, and the more likely that we will achieve our goals of writing a constitution perfect suitable for the country." Chen said.
