Taipei, June 15 (CNA) President Chen Shui-bian unveiled six goals for the police Tuesday, saying that his administration's agenda depends heavily on their achieving the six goals.
In a written letter of congratulations to the nation's policemen on Police Day, Chen said the reforms pursued by his government in the fields of politics, the economy, finance, the judiciary and society need the support and cooperation of the police and this support and cooperation is their first goal.
As peace and order is vital to the country's economic development, the president said the country will have difficulty boosting its economy if it cannot maintain public security, therefore good public order should be the second goal.
The third goal, the president said, should be for the police to improve their competence in enforcing the law and sticking to the letter of the law while carrying out their jobs.
The fourth goal is to tap into the abundant private resources to check crime.
The fifth is to improve police department efficiency and upgrade services to the public, while the sixth is for the police to maintain a clean image and to serve as a law-abiding example for the people.
