2004-06-30

Taipei, June 30 (CNA) President Chen Shui-bian Wednesday hailed the smooth U.S. transfer of sovereignty to an interim Iraqi government on June 28, saying it marks a good start for reconstruction of Iraq into a liberal and prosperous democracy. "On behalf of the Republic of China government, I want to extend my best wishes to the Iraqi government and people for their success in achieving peace, freedom, democracy and prosperity, " Chen said in a press release issued by the Presidential Office.

Chen said the ROC government and many private organizations have offered humanitarian assistance to Iraq since April 2003 and that many aid programs are still on-going. "We are more than willing to continue engagements with the Iraqi government and people. We can offer our economic development experiences for the interim Iraqi government's reference," Chen said.

To the extent of its capability, Chen said, Taiwan will join forces with the international community in assisting the Iraqi government and people in rebuilding their war-torn country. "We desire to contribute to Iraq's reconstruction by cooperating with other countries around the world in carrying out relevant projects," Chen reiterated.

Chen further said he is optimistic about Iraq's future prospects. "I hope the Iraqi government can resume order, peace, stability and security in the Middle East country as early as possible," he added.
