President Chen Meets with Top Chiefs and Specialists of the Republic of China's Overseas Technical Missions
2004-07-14

Taipei, July 14 (CNA) President Chen Shui-bian said Wednesday Taiwan will contribute more to the world in the future.

Chen made the remarks while meeting with top chiefs and specialists of the Republic of China's overseas technical missions who have returned to attend a training workshop.

Over the past four decades, Chen said, Taiwan has dispatched technical missions to many countries that maintain either formal diplomatic ties or friendly unofficial ties with it to assist in their agricultural, fishery and trade development as well as improvement of their medical services and health care. "Thanks to your devoted efforts, we have set good models in international cooperation, humanitarian aid and promotion of sustainable development by rendering technical assistance to so many developing countries," Chen said.

In the future, Chen said, Taiwan should make even more similar efforts to contribute to the world and to expand its diplomatic frontiers. "We should not ask what the world can do for us, but should instead ask what we can bring to the world with our achievements in democracy, economic development and human rights," Chen said.

During his second four-year term, Chen said he will continue to travel overseas to break Beijing's diplomatic embargo against Taiwan and to upgrade the ROC's international profile as well as to contribute to global peace and prosperity.
