President Chen Calls on Yu Hsiu-chih, the Author of "With Perseverance, There Will Be Hope "
2004-10-02

Taipei, Oct. 2 (CNA) President Chen Shui-bian Saturday visited physically-challenged writer Yu Hsiu-chih, praising the woman as having given people a good path to follow on the quest for the meaning of life.

Chen said Yu's biography, entitled "With Perseverance, There Will Be Hope, " is bringing optimism to and touching the hearts of many people who have experienced misfortune in their lives.

Taking his own wife, Wu Shu-jen, who is also bound to a wheelchair, as an example, Chen said Wu won respect at the 2004 Athens Paralympic Games last month because of her perseverance.

Chen pointed out that Yu had donated 50 copies of her book to the Chinese Taipei Paralympic Committee to raise funds for the mentally and physically challenged, and that the excellent showing of Taiwan's paralympic athletes is the best reward for Yu.

The Chinese Taipei team won two gold, two silver and two bronze medals at the Games, the best-ever performance for the country.

Chen said his wife led the team to Athens to show her support for athletes with disabilities, and the good results prove that nothing is impossible.

The president said people in good health have no right to be pessimistic and lose hope in life because they can stand up and overcome whatever problems they have.
