Taipei, Nov. 3 (CNA) President Chen Shui-bian met with visiting Vanuatu Prime Minister Serge Vohor Wednesday to celebrate the establishment of formal diplomatic relations between the two countries earlier in the day. "This is a historic day. After 12 years of efforts, Taiwan and Vanuatu have finally forged full diplomatic ties. It is belated good news and the tie-up deserves celebration by the governments and peoples of our two countries," Chen told his guest.
Chen attributed the success in forging ties in part to Vohor's long-term friendship and support for the Republic of China. Chen recalled that Taiwan and Vanuatu already signed a joint communique on mutual recognition in 1992 to pave the way for establishing diplomatic ties during Vohor's tenure as Vanuatu foreign minister. "Thanks to Vohor's unwavering support for Taiwan, the two countries have finally been able to forge full diplomatic ties 12 years later, "Chen said jubilantly.
Chen also lauded Vohor for his achievements in promoting democratic reform in his country, especially in leading its coalition government in carrying out a series of constitutional reforms and winning a majority in the parliament. "These achievements indicate that Vohor has outstanding leadership capability and political wisdom, " Chen said, adding that the fact Vohor's party controls 32 seats in the 52-seat parliament has helped ensure that his reform programs have been carried out smoothly.
Noting that both Taiwan and Vanuatu are maritime states, Chen said he hopes the two countries can strengthen fishery cooperation. Vanuatu has a booming fishery industry. "With shared values of freedom, democracy and peace, our two countries should work together in the future to promote regional peace, stability and prosperity," Chen said.
For his part, Vohor said he looks forward to seeing the two countries develop mutually beneficial relations on an equal and reciprocal basis. He also assured Chen that Vanuatu will support Taiwan's cause in the international arena.
Vohor also expressed his hope that Taiwan will provide its successful economic development experience for his country's reference or emulation. "Let our two sides expand exchanges and cooperate closely in pursuing common interests and benefits, " he added.
