Taipei, Dec. 29 (CNA) President Chen Shui-bian lauded the members of the Presidential Office Youth Volunteer Corps as a bridge between the people and the government Wednesday, saying their experience in the corps will turn them into new Taiwan citizens.
Chen made the statement at the commencement of the second Presidential Office Youth Volunteer Corps, saying that the practice gives the nation's youth a chance to take part in the government's policy-shaping process.
Noting that the Youth Conference on National Issues, organized by the National Youth Commission in September, has come up with a recommendation for a Youth Volunteer Corps in the administration, the president said it is a good idea that would give young people an outlet to help shape public policy.
Chen said he believes the National Youth Commission will work out a proposal to meet the desire of young people to be involved in public affairs.
