President Chen Receives Members of the Taiwan Culture and Performance Arts Association Lead by Yu Tien
2005-01-12

Taipei, Jan. 12 (CNA) President Chen Shui-bian ordered the Government Information Office (GIO) and related authorities Wednesday to study measures to protect the opportunities for local entertainers.

Chen issued the directive while receiving members of the Taiwan Culture and Performance Arts Association led by Yu Tien. GIO Director-General Lin Chia-lung and Council of Labor Affairs Chairwoman Chen Chu were also present at the meeting.

Chen said show business is an important part of the entertainment industry and is also the fundamental of the country's cultural and creative industry.

As the Taiwanese identity is being emphasized today, the voice of every performer should be appreciated, listened to and taken seriously because each performer represents an irreplaceable opinion in Taiwan's diverse society, according to Chen.

He noted that Taiwan's show business has developed under a historical background that is different to that of Hong Kong, mainland China, Japan and South Korea.

Therefore, he said, Taiwan cannot follow the successful experience of other countries and must tailor a favorable environment for itself.
