2005-01-24

Taipei, Jan. 24 (CNA) President Chen Shui-bian and visiting Chadian President Idriss Deby signed a joint communique Monday in Kaohsiung, southern Taiwan.

The two leaders said in the joint communique that they are satisfied with bilateral cooperation projects in various areas and hope that such cooperation can be further expanded to other fields.

Deby expressed appreciation to Taiwan for helping his nation with various development projects and much-needed technical assistance, making Chad one of the models of African development.

Both leaders also expressed sadness over the tremendous losses in South Asia and Southeast Asia caused by the tsunami in the wake of the 9.0-magnitude earthquake in the Indian Ocean near Sumatra Dec. 26.

They also expressed worry about the threat to the international community posed by international terrorism, adding that the two countries will work with the international community to prevent terrorist activities.
