Joint Communiqé Between His Excellency Kessai H. Note, President of the Republic of the Marshall Islands and His Excellency Chen Shui-bian, President of the Republic of China (Taiwan)

At the invitation of His Excellency Kessai H. Note, President of the Republic of the Marshall Islands, His Excellency Chen Shui-bian, President of the Republic of China (Taiwan), accompanied by a high-level delegation, paid a three-day state visit to the Republic of the Marshall Islands from the first to the third of May, 2005.

During his visit, President Chen exchanged views with President Note on current world affairs, peace, security and development in the Asia-Pacific region, and matters of mutual concern in a cordial and congenial atmosphere. Both leaders also discussed a wide range of issues pertaining to the two countries. They agreed that all countries should resolve regional or international disputes according to the principles of sovereignty and equality, and through peaceful means such as dialogue, consultation and negotiation.

President Chen and President Note expressed their satisfaction with the cordial ties and cooperation between their respective countries, and their hope to further strengthen bilateral relations in the future. They also committed themselves to fostering long-term friendship and consolidating diplomatic relations between the two countries. Based on the aforesaid commitment, both countries will continue to solidify and deepen bilateral ties through mutual consultation and cooperation.

President Chen was deeply impressed with the remarkable achievements of the Republic of the Marshall Islands in the areas of good governance, economic development, and the promotion of democracy, freedom and human rights. President Chen extended sincere gratitude to President Note and the Government of the Marshal Islands for the warm welcome and genuine hospitality accorded to him and his delegation. President Chen also conveyed his appreciation for the continued support that the Republic of the Marshall Islands Government has rendered to Taiwan in the United Nations and other regional and international organizations. President Kessai H. Note also expressed his sincere gratitude to the People and Government of the Republic of China (Taiwan) for its contribution in the development of the Republic of the Marshall Islands. Both leaders reassured each other on the continuance of mutual assistance and cooperation in an equal and mutually beneficial manner.

President Chen extended a cordial invitation to President Note to visit Taiwan again, and President Note accepted the invitation with pleasure. The date of the visit will be discussed through diplomatic channels.

Done in Majuro, on the second day of the fifth month of the year two thousand and five, corresponding to the second day of the fifth month of the ninety-fourth year of the Republic of China (Taiwan)
