Vice President Lu Attends "Song of Life" Concert
2005-05-09

Vice President Annette Lu today attended the "Song of Life" concert sponsored by ING Antai Life Insurance Co. Mr. John Lang and members of the Kiwi Miracle Musical Group performed "Standing Tall on High Hills." Vice President Lu also witnessed the signing of a sponsorship agreement between ING Antai and the Kiwi Miracle Musical Group.

After the performance, Vice President Lu during her speech said that those whose position made them stood on high hills above everyone else need to have love and concern for others. Without love, they could pose a threat to humanity. She said that Mr. John Lang was a fighter for life. If his misfortune had befallen other people, they would probably have lost meaning in life. He not only chose life, but also resolved to develop his talents in music and in pottery. He has even written a book. This was highly commendable, said Vice President Lu. ING Antai has also made contributions to the Creation Social Welfare Foundation and to the Taiwan Foundation for Rare Disorders. This shows that they are not only out to make profit, but also share out their benefits with others.

Vice President Lu said that present-day society needs much love and concern. Everyday from our television screens, we witness the most depressing news of suicides, people jumping to their deaths. It is good that we could still find love in our society. Some time ago, amidst the economic downturn, the vice president said she understood that love was what mattered, the treasure that survived. Faced with a bleak economy that brings with it much hardship, love is what keeps society from breaking up.

God uses various means to challenge and temper the human spirit. Mr. John Lang and members of the Kiwi Miracle Musical Group finding themselves on the crucible of their physical disabilities overcame all obstacles and gave us the gift of their music. This is courage, wisdom and magnanimity, said Vice President Lu. She called on everyone to muster the same bravery, love and good judgment to build our world.

When the Kiwi Miracle Musical Group was established in 1998, Mr. John Lang was the group's drummer. The other members had physical disabilities. In 2002, he obtained the Fervent Global Love of Lives Medal from the Chou Ta-Kuan Cultural and Education Foundation. He has performed with a jazz band during a dinner held at the Office of the President. ING Aetna will sponsor 45 performances of the group in prisons and schools.
