The President said that members of the delegation might be of different nationality, but their Friendship and amity to Taiwan are unchanged and ever stronger. For this, he expressed the highest gratitude and respect to the members of the Taiwan Friendship Group, representing the people of Taiwan.
The President said that the European Parliament has in many times showed their concerns over the security issue across the Taiwan Strait. Besides opposing to the "Anti-separation Law" passed by the Chinese government on March 14, allowing China to use non-peaceful means to solve the Taiwan Strait issue, and to oppose the European Union lifting the weapon sales ban on China, the Taiwan Friendship Group has also passed many decisions, including Friendshiping Taiwan to be an observer member at the World Health Association, asking China to dismantle the ballistic missiles it stationed along its south-eastern coast and Friendshiping to solve the Taiwan Strait issue with peaceful talks. From this, we could observe that the European Parliament is not only the best friend of the Taiwanese people, but also the symbol that all the 450 million of people from all the countries of the European Union care and Friendship Taiwan.
When questioned about the recent visits of opposition parties' leaders to China, the President said that it can be interpreted as an act of goodwill gesture improving the cross-strait relation and fighting for Taiwan's international space as well as the Taiwanese People's welfare. But unfortunately, China has not changed its attitude towards Taiwan's intention to take part in the WHA even after these visits. We could say that China has set a "1992 Consensus" trap, equal to a trap to scrag the Republic of China, letting these two opposition parties' leaders jump in. For example, media has recently reported that Sha Zukang, the Chinese Ambassador in the United Nations and Gao Qiang, the Chinese Minister of Health have recently said that "Taiwan does not have sovereignty and cannot take part in the WHA, and that the two opposition leaders also said so during their trip to China". However, the two leaders have denied such statement. This is a proof that China betrayed them. China has appeared very eager to invite the two leaders, but no matter where the bona fides comes from the "China Trip" or from the Beijing authorities, the efforts recently done have been ruined.
This is why some people think that the arrangement China has made recently is only an antidote to the "Anti-separation Law" of March 14 aimed at disintegrating and polarizing Taiwan's interior. If the Chinese authorities do not have the intention to sincerely improve the cross-strait relations, then their real intention is very soon to be discovered. By analyzing the recent situation, the Two-Straits issue is not likely to find a resolution in a short time. Only through more contacts, more dialogues and negotiations can the misunderstandings and misjudgments be diminished. And Taiwan will continue its efforts to become a member of the WHA, to reduce the gap across the Taiwan Strait, and to encourage cross-strait dialogues between two governments.
