President Chen Talks about the SARS Epidemic in a Television Broadcast

Taipei, May 31 (CNA) Although the situation regarding severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) is stabilizing, President Chen Shui-bian urged the public Saturday not to ease their vigilance against the disease.

In a taped television broadcast, the president called on the public to keep washing their hands frequently and monitor their temperatures closely as SARS usually occurs with an high fever.

The president also touted his government's programs to offer credit to business which have suffered financial difficulties because of SARS and a NT$58.4 billion (US$1.68 billion) extra budget for public projects to stimulate the economic recovery.

With these two programs, Chen said his government is confident the country will soon be back to normal.
