2005-06-16

President Chen receives Marshall Islands' Speaker of the Parliament the Hon. Litokwa Tomeing.

The president said that he was honored to have had the opportunity to visit the Marshall Islands from May 1 to May 3 earlier this year and attended the ceremony of its 26th independence anniversary. He will never forget the warm reception and the friendship he received during his stay. The president also expressed his gratefulness to Tomeing's invitation to make a speech at the parliament while visiting his country.

The president recognized that Tomeing is the most successful and senior politician in the Marshall Islands. He has been in politics for 40 years. In 1965, he became mayor and served for eight years. After the independence of the Marshall Islands, he was the first term senator in 1979. Since then, he has been in the parliament also becoming deputy-speaker and later the speaker. The contributions he has made to his country are not only admirable, but also set fine examples for others to follow.

The president also hopes that Tomeing's visit will lead to further strengthening of ties between Taiwan and the Marshall Islands and boost current cooperation, especially in the field of aquaculture, which Taiwan has been more than happy to offer its experience.

The president also expressed his gratitude for Tomeing's help in 2000 for supporting Taiwan in becoming a development partner in the Pacific Islands Forum. The president pointed out that without the help of the speaker, Taiwan would have never had the opportunity to take part in it. He hopes that Tomeing will keep supporting Taiwan as he has done in the past. Finally, the president asked Tomeing to convey his best regards and gratitude to the president of the Marshall Islands Mr. Kessai Note and his wife.
