Vice President Annette Lu headed toward Kaohsiung City this afternoon to visit the exhibition of the "2005 Taiwan Design Expo."
The vice president first arrived at the Wei-Wu military Camp, the exhibition venue of the "2005 Taiwan Design Expo" this year and the location for an array of art fairs in Kaohsiung, and received briefings on the annual design fair. Vice President Lu toured several of the pavilions of the expo, including Future Pavilion, Fashion Pavilion, International Pavilion, and Green Pavilion. She praised the art and design contributions made by local artists as well as the ideas that the art works have presented.
The vice president left for the Kaohsiung Confucius Temple in the evening and presented the winners with awards of a Taiwan oil painting contest.
The vice president applauded the oil painting contest, saying that the competition has fully demonstrated the Taiwanese spirit as a marine island and a love for Taiwan and art. She also hailed sponsors of the event for boosting the morale in Taiwan's art arena.
The Vice President said that former U.S. President Bill Clinton has set the second week of May every year as the Taiwan Week in remembrance of the Taiwanese contribution to the United States. In response to the friendship extended by Mr. Clinton, Vice President Lu announced that she would arrange all winning artwork in the oil painting competition to go on display in the U.S. next May for the Americans to understand more about Taiwan.
