President Chen Attends the Textile International Forum and Exhibition 2005.

President Chen Shui-bian attended this afternoon the "Opening Ceremony of the Textile International Forum and Exhibition 2005," giving a speech at the ceremony and acknowledging the achievements made through the innovation of Taiwan's textile industry.

The president's remarks:

It's been my pleasure to be invited to the "Opening Ceremony of the Textile International Forum and Exhibition 2005" and to gather with all leaders and experts in the textile industry. We are here to witness the accomplishments of our technology and innovation in this field. And through this event, we continue to bring innovation and vitality into the industry.

The textile industry has thrived in Taiwan for half a century and has long contributed to the growth of the country's economy. While in the face of tremendous challenges in recent years, Taiwan has maintained its role as one of the important links in the global chain of supply through wisdoms and hard work by our industrial leaders. Meanwhile, the Taiwanese industries will keep meeting the daily needs of people all over the world with our products that are healthy, safe and comfortable.

Over the past several years, the government has invested funding in facilitating the private sector to enhance their competitiveness. Division and integration of resources can be attained through the implementation of policies regarding technology and economy. The government has, on the one hand, encouraged R&D sectors to continue their endeavor in innovation and to focus the bulk of their businesses in Taiwan. On the other hand, the government has partnered with local textile enterprises in their effort to compete in the global market and to gain new ground in the world. In the future, the government will keep assisting local businesses while eliminating obstacles that bar Taiwan's industries from further development. National industrial policies will also be devised to meet the changing environment of the future.

I would like to encourage all of you, my distinguished guests here, to keep striving for Taiwan's textile business so our traditional industries can be revitalized, creating more exports and job opportunities. I also want to take this opportunity to extend my most sincere appreciation and respect again for the contributions you have made in the textile industry.
