Taipei, May 19 (CNA) President Chen Shui-bian has nominated 15 members to the next Council of Grand Justices, the main body of the Judicial Yuan, who will take office Oct. 1 following confirmation by the Legislative Yuan, an official of the Presidential Office said Monday.

Chiou I-jen, secretary-general of the Presidential Office, said that the incumbent president of the Judicial Yuan, Weng Yueh-sheng, and his deputy, Cheng Chung-mo, are among the nominees and will continue to lead the nation's highest judicial organization.

Among the 15 incumbent grand justices, only five, including Weng and Cheng, are nominated for the next Council of Grand Justices, Chiou noted, adding that three nominees are female, a record for the council.

Of the 15 nominees, eight members, including the president and vice president of the Judicial Yuan, will serve for four years. The remaining will serve for eight years.

The nominations will be referred to the Legislative Yuan by the end of this month, he added.
