President Chen Shui-bian attended the "2005 Filial Piety Prize" Ceremony on December 30, 2005 and distributed certificates to the prize winners.
The entire content of his address at the event is as follows:
I am honored to have the opportunity to participate in this "Filial Piety Prize" ceremony and to accompany everyone here at year's end as this event carries immense significance in bringing together these exemplary members of society.
I have carefully read through the actual works of the recipients and have seen how each of you has kept to a path of loyalty and carefully provided care to your parents, adoptive parents, parents-in-law and relatives. What you have offered to your elders is truly moving. The personal experiences of these seven award winners show the most honorable aspect of human nature and it is hoped that those of us in society will all be able to learn how to better "love life and honor our parents" from these very moving testaments and at the same time gain greater warmth during this cold winter.
If I remember correctly, last year past on this date, December 30, we honored the birthday of the founder of this prize. It carries immense significance in holding this ceremony on the same day this year even though this year we no longer see him. Yet we are extremely happy and gratified that Lady Wu and her children and Chairman Kao carry on the legacy by hosting this meaningful event. It will be January 1, 2006 after two more days, and I wish you all peace, healthy, happiness and may the members of the board have health and live for a century. I wish you all here present, guests, experts, and friends the best of health and goodness in all your endeavors.
