Seeing promotion of democracy as what is mutually shared, President Chen associated General's Wiranto's achievement with his resolution in maintaining the peace status quo in the Taiwan Straits region. "Whereas a great general's cause is to prevent wars from taking place, as the president, my cause is to defend peace and prevent cross-strait wars from happening by means of democracy," the president said.
The president and the general's discussion then turned to mutual cooperation. The president told the Indonesian democracy advocate that, as long as the US$13.6 billion bilateral trade is concerned, Taiwan is the fifth largest investor in Indonesia, and the amount is one-third of its total investments in Southeast Asia. However, there have been no official bilateral talks regarding economic issues in many years. "It is extremely important to restore ministerial meetings between Taiwan and Indonesia," the president urged General Wiranto.
In addition, the president showed his concern over avian flu epidemics in Indonesia. Together with the issue of natural resource and energy, the president regarded these as potential areas in which the two countries can develop their cooperation further.
Then the flow of discussion turned to Taiwan's pride, Director Ang Lee, who just won the 78th Academy Award as best director. General Wiranto praised Ang Lee's achievement as the first Asian winning this title. Therefore, "Ang Lee is not merely the Light of Taiwan, but also the Light of Asia," the president added.
To conclude the meeting, the president asked the guests to pass his regards to President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and Vice President Jusuf Kalla of Indonesia. The other Indonesian delegates in the meeting included Fachrul Razi, Indonesia's former Deputy TNI Chief Commander, Suardi Marasabessy, former Commander of the Wirabuana Military Commander, Consultant Karna B. Lesmana, Consultant Fran Chayady, and Ferry Yahya, Indonesia's representative in Taiwan.
