Vice President Converses with Cartoonists
2006-03-06

Vice President Annette Lu had a talk with some of the Taiwanese cartoonists on March 6, acknowledging their creative mockeries that have contributed to Taiwan's democracy.

The vice president cited the recent dispute aroused by a Danish cartoonist in his depicting of the Islamic Prophet Mohamed. "The power of caricature traverses across geographic boundaries…In the Taiwan's history of socio-political development, cartoons have also played an important role," said the vice president.

The vice president matter-of-factly appreciated cartoonists' rebuke or encouragement to the ruling Democratic Progressive Party and interpretations of the gender issue. "Caricature is an art, a philosophy, and a reflection of life," the vice president shared with the cartoonists.

At the same time, the vice president showed her concern over the cultural industry. She particularly pointed out the widespread "Korean spree." "While attending a conference of the Democratic Pacific Union this June in Seoul, Korea, I will observe its cultural industry and bring some experience back to

Taiwan," said the vice president.

Listening to and sharing with the cartoonists' comments, the vice president had spent a rather unique afternoon.
