2006-04-07

Vice President Lu Calls for Women's Wisdom and Love.
On April 7, Vice President Annette Lu called for women's wisdom, compassion, and love in her visit to Yunlin and Chiayi Counties.

In Chiayi County, the vice president attended the launching ceremony for the "Good Young Women Corps," a volunteer group whose members consist entirely of women. Sharing her pride with the corps members, the vice president said, "Although Taiwan is not yet a member of the United Nations, the number of Taiwanese women in politics and economics rank 19th in the world and first in Asia."

In her address to the audience at Chiayi County, the vice president also mentioned the "Good Housekeeper Project," an initiative to achieve the goals of "good parenting," "child welfare," and "family wellness."

After visiting Chiayi County, the vice president stopped in Yunlin County, a stronghold of democracy in Taiwan, and praised its citizens for electing its first female county magistrate in the 2005 year-end local election.

The Rate of Female Political Participation in Taiwan is ranked highest in Asia.  There are currently 47 female legislators in the Legislative Yuan and 233 female representatives holding seats in city or county councils.
