On April 6, 2006, Vice President Annette Lu presided over a symposium on the "Good Housekeeper Project" and urged the government to enforce the initiative and train at least 100,000 qualified housekeepers in two years.
The "Good Housekeeper Project" was initiated by the vice president last November to achieve "three well-beings": good parenting, child welfare, and family wellness, as well as a "three-way win situation": to improve women's full employment, to resolve the unemployment crises, and to reduce dependence on foreign maids.
"Together with the 'Good Housekeeper Project'," the vice president said, "we also aim to decrease the number of 'housewives' and increase job opportunities for 'housekeepers'."
According to the vice president, the idea and practice of housekeeping should not be limited to the hospitality industry, but should rather be expanded to the household domain. Therefore, she emphasized that the project should be implemented as policy that is both professional and responsible.
The symposium took place at the Office of the President. The attendees included Vice Premier Tsai Ying-wen and several other cabinet members.
