Taipei, May 11 (CNA) President Chen Shui-bian paid separate visits to two model mothers Sunday to express his respect and admiration for their contribution to the nation as part of Mother's Day celebrations.
Chen presented fresh bundles of carnations and other gifts to You Yueh-chu, a model mother selected by military units, and Chung A-hsiu, a model mother chosen by police forces.
He also took advantage of the occasion to wish all mothers around the nation a happy Mother's Day.
Accompanied by Minister of Defense Tang Yiau-min and Taipei County Magistrate Su Tseng-chang, Chen arrived at You's home in Hsintien on the outskirts of Taipei early in the morning.
As Sunday happened to be You's 68th birthday, Chen wished her many happy returns.
Chen lauded You as a the Republic of China military academies' "super saleswoman." Six of her sons and grandsons are either graduates or cadets of military academies. She has also often volunteered her services for elderly mainland Chinese-born retired servicemen.
Later in the day, Chen traveled to a mountain village in Pinglin, Taipei County to visit Chung A-hsiu, 62, in recognition of her voluntary services to local police officers. Her eldest son is a also police officer.
