On May 2, the day after the national Labor Day, President Chen Shui-bian received the model laborers of the year and their families at the Office of the President, reassuring them that the government will continue to ensure labor rights and protect laborers' welfare.
During the meeting, the president praised the model laborers as the backbone of Taiwan's economic development and social stability, adding that to take care of the laborers and to promote labor welfare are the spirit embodied in the constitution as well as the government's policy.
The president especially mentioned to his guests that the government has planned to include into the constitution the laborers' rights to organize, to bargain, and to act collectively.
Presidential Deputy Secretary-General Cho Jung-tai and Chairman Li Ying-yuan of the Labor Affairs Council were also present during the meeting.
