President Chen Shui-bian met with Dr. Michael Green of the US Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) on May 15 at the Office of the President, and reassured him that for the next two years he will continue to steadfastly cooperate with the United States for the common interests of the two countries.
The president also reiterated that his promises to President Bush and the US government, including Taiwan's arms procurement, remain unchanged. He told his guest that his administration will do its best to convince the Legislature to pass the procurement bill.
As Karan Bhatia, Deputy US Trade Representative, will come to Taiwan to discuss the Trade Investment Framework Agreement (TIFA) later this month, the president told Green that the two countries could take that opportunity to extensively exchange views about what should be done for the best common interests.
Dr. Green is the Japan Chair and a senior advisor at the CSIS. His visit to the Office of the President was accompanied by Taiwan's Deputy Foreign Minister Michael Kau. Ma Yung-chen, Deputy Secretary-General to the President, was also present at the meeting.
