Vice President Lu Announces Publication of Her Book, Soft Power: Vision for a New Era
2006-05-19

Vice President Annette Lu attended a ceremony for the publication of her book, Soft Power: Vision for a New Era, on May 19 at the Office of the President, saying that this book represents the summary of Taiwanese people's fights against poverty, dictatorship, political isolation, and military threat, rather than a mere collection of her speeches.

Borrowing the term "soft power" from Joseph Nye, dean of Harvard's Kennedy School of Government, the vice president said that some of the most highly acknowledged countries in the world, including Taiwan, have rather small territories and populations. "Soft power matters," emphasized the vice president.

The guests attending the ceremony included Burkina Faso Ambassador Jacques Sawadogo, Costa Rica Ambassador Oscar Alvarz, and Honduras Ambassador Marlene Villela-Talbott. Taiwan's Foreign Minister James Huang was also present at the ceremony.
