On June 14 at the Office of the President, President Chen Shui-bian met with seven Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) mayors and magistrates from southern Taiwan, and talked with them about the Water Disaster Prevention Budget Bill currently pending in the Legislative Yuan.
The seven DPP local administrators came from Kaohsiung City, Kaohsiung County, Tainan City, Tainan County, Yunlin County, Chiayi County, and Pingtung County, whose residents recently suffered from disastrous rainfalls and floodings.
As the president immediately inspected the water disaster conditions in southern Taiwan when the calamity happened, the seven mayors and magistrates extended to him gratitude on behalf of their residents.
Together with the seven local administrators, the president called on the Legislative Yuan to approve the budget for water disaster prevention, which will focus on risk eradication other than loss control and rescue work.
Toward the end of the meeting, the president elevated the meeting agenda to a national level, appealing to the opposition parties to seriously consider the Arms Procurement Bill, still stranded in the legislature, and have it discussed and come to a conclusion soon.
Deputy Secretary-General to the President Cho Jung-tai was also present at the meeting.
