President Chen's Statement on the Failure of the Presidential Recall Motion
2006-06-27

The recall motion against President Chen Shui-bian failed to pass in the Legislative Yuan on June 27. Regarding this voting result, the president said that he respects the constitutional rule and whether or not he is in power does not matter. He thus made the following statement:

1. The president respects all the due procedures and results according to the Constitution. In addition to apologizing to the public that he himself and his family had brought about such a great social cost, he called on all the political parties to respect the voting result and to actively placate their supporters in order to restore social order.

2. As to the cases currently under investigation, the president reiterated his resolution to respect and trust the legal system, and called on all the citizens to have confidence in justice, to give full powers to the investigators, and to leave the final rule to judiciary.

3. The previously scheduled reviews of the bills related to people's livelihood have been postponed due to the presidential recall motion. Therefore, the president appealed to the ruling and opposition parties to return to rationality, to sympathize with the people, to "agonize over the agony of the people," and to pass the bills related to the livelihood of the people as soon as possible.

4. The president is worried that Taiwan's internal solidarity has been severely affected by the recent political contention and social antagonism. Sincerely, he would like to hear comments from all sectors of society and make a self-examination. Also, in order to unite the country and bring about a harmonious society, he wishes to promote political consultation and cross-strait peace talks.
