Dominican Ambassador to the ROC Carlos J. Guzman Presents His Credentials
2003-04-24

Taipei, April 24 (CNA) New Dominican Ambassador to Taipei Carlos J. Guzman presented his credentials to President Chen Shui-bian Thursday, accompanied by John Feng, director of the Protocol Department under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Chen welcomed Guzman's appointment, describing him as an outstanding scholar-turned-diplomat.

He said that he has known Guzman for a long time because Guzman, who was in charge of protocol affairs for Dominican President Hipolito Mejia, was present throughout Chen's 2000 visit to the Dominican Republic and during Mejia's two visits to Taiwan.

Chen noted that the fact that Mejia named his close aide as ambassador to Taiwan indicates the importance with which the president regards the promotion of the two countries' relations.

Guzman said that he will do his best to further enhance the friendly relations between his country and the Republic of China.

Chen extended thanks for the support from the Dominican Republic and welcomed a visit to Taipei by the Dominican first lady scheduled for next week.

He also told Guzman that Feng has been appointed as the new ROC ambassador to the Dominican Republic.

Several other local officials were present at the ceremony to witness Guzman presenting his credentials, including Presidential Secretary-General Chiou I-jen and Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Huang Lung-yuan.
