Vice President Lu Speaks at 2006 Digital Cities Convention Taipei

Vice President Lu Speaks at 2006 Digital Cities Convention Taipei.
When speaking at the "2006 Digital Cities Convention Taipei" on June 29, Vice President Annette Lu congratulated Taipei Mayor Ma Ying-jeou on Taipei's being ranked first in an evaluation of more than 50 "digital cities" in the world.

The vice president also praised the mayor for his endeavors in continuing and completing the urban projects formulated by his predecessor, President Chen Shui-bian. These projects include the construction of "Taipei 101", now the tallest skyscraper in the world, and creating Taipei as a digital wireless city.

Besides having reshaped Taipei as an "e-city" and transformed the city dwellers into "e-citizens" through digitalization, the central government has earmarked a NT$300 billion budget for the year 2007, aimed at setting up 3000 mega-hubs in Taiwan's 25 cities and counties, which will provide 6 million households with wireless access to the internet, said the vice president.

However, the vice president never isolates technology from humanity. In her speech delivered at the convention, she proposed three forms of rights that should be given to people in the cyber era: the Right to Know--to know about what one wants to know; the Right "Not" to Know--not to know about what one does not want to know; and the Right "Not to Be Known"--not to be known about in order to protect the privacy of one's own.

Speaking before the guests representing more than 20 nations and cities, the vice president also wished the convention great success.
