2006-07-01

Receiving a cape from the king of the Kingdom of Children's Folklore, Vice President Annette Lu announced on July 1 the opening of the 2006 International Children's Folklore and Folkgame Festival, currently being held in Taiwan's Yilan County.

In the opening ceremony of the festival, the vice president welcomed the guests from Australia, Argentina, Russia, the Republic of Georgia, Thailand, Canada, India, and Malaysia.

In addition to the vice president's attendance, the 2006 International Children's Folklore and Folkgame Festival is also highlighted by the recent opening of the Taipei-Yilan Highway and the Hsuehshan Tunnel, which make travel from Taipei to Yilan more convenient than ever. Through the Taipei-Yilan Tunnel, the vice president said, Yilan has become Taiwan's lookout point when Taiwan looks eastwards to the Pacific Ocean.

Prior to this, the vice president met with a group of fishermen in Suao Township, listening to their opinions in order to know what their problems were. She told them she had always wanted to set up a council for maritime affairs, which, according to her, will be instrumental in promoting Taiwan's maritime culture.
