President Chen Meets with Taiwan's 2006 HOBY Attendees

President Chen Meets with Taiwan's 2006 HOBY Attendees.

"There are more than 200 youngsters from over 30 countries participating in each year's HOBY seminar, whose purpose is to encourage the young to meet challenges, to be active and positive, to mold their personal values, and, most importantly, to develop their identification with their social milieu," the president told his young guests. "This is exactly in line with the objectives of the United Nations, and what you are going to experience and learn in this year's HOBY will be instrumental in your social participation in the future."

Therefore, he encouraged them always to "participate in public affairs discussions and bravely express personal opinions without conceiving matters only by their appearances," which, according to him, is the true embodiment of pluralism and cultural polyvalency.

When asked by the president how they are going to introduce Taiwan to overseas friends, these students pointed out such perspectives as culture and customs, geography, politico-economic status, and technological and scientific developments.
