President Chen Gives a Taped Address to World Federation of Taiwanese Associations' Annual Gathering
2006-07-29

President Chen gave a taped address to the 33rd annual meeting of the World Federation of Taiwanese Associations held in Toronto, Canada on July 29.

The president said in his taped speech that he has four criteria to judge whether or not the executive branch of the government, under the leadership of Premier Su Tseng-chang, deviates from the core values of "Taiwan nativism" and "care for the disadvantaged groups"-- namely, increasing investment in Taiwan, creating employment, narrowing the cleft between the urban and rural areas, and bridging the gap between the rich and the poor.

"While the goals and directions have been clearly stated," he emphasized, "it is of great importance for us to perform well in order to provide Taiwan's sustainable development with a better foundation and favorable conditions."

He also admitted that his administration should partly be held responsible for such political contentions as the disagreement on national identity, the dilemma of transitional justice, the antagonistic hostility between political parties, and the selection of Taiwan's constitutional system.

At the end of his address, the president thanked the members of the federation for their long-time support for Taiwan, and wished them good health and the event a great success.
