President Chen Congratulates Winners of
President Chen Shui-bian received Taiwan's student winners of the 2006 International Schools Cyberfair (ISC) on August 1 at the Office of the President. He congratulated these elementary and high school students for their excellence in the competition, which brought Taiwan its fourth straight ISC world championship.

As these students are from various cities and towns, the championship proves the government's earnest efforts in bridging the urban-rural informational gap, the president said.

The president also shared with the students his pride that Taiwan is participating in the "One Laptop Per Child" (OLPC) project initiated by Director Nicholas Negroponte of the Media Lab of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, which aims to help every child in underdeveloped countries acquire a laptop computer at low prices. "I am glad that Taiwan is contributing to this project to build up a digital bridge for the world's kids," he said.

The students' visit to the Office of the President was accompanied by Taiwan's Deputy Minister of Education Wu Tsai-shun.
