Vice President Lu Meets with US Democratic Party's "Stars of Tomorrow"
2006-08-01

Vice President Annette Lu met with a group of young political workers of the US Democratic Party on August 1 at the Office of the President. She shared with them her memories of the time when she studied in the United States and the force that turned her into a feminist and a politician.

The vice president particularly compared herself with Dr. Ma Ying-jeou, who is the mayor of Taipei, the chairman of the Kuomintang (KMT), and, like the vice president, a Harvard graduate. She said to her guests that Ma was smart to stand in line with KMT, the ruling party at that time, after returning to Taiwan from the United States, whereas she decided to join the opposition camp.

Most of these "stars of tomorrow" graduated from prestigious universities, and some of them even have experiences in being involved in US presidential election campaigns. "You are, as it were, the King Makers," the vice president said, praising her guests.

In return, these "King Makers" thanked the vice president for her time and hospitality, and said that they were impressed by Taiwan's democratic change during the past ten years.

"The change in the last decade is far beyond our perception," the vice president responded, referring to the fact that China's missile threat against Taiwan over the same period has also grown to a great extent. "While emphasizing that the status quo in the Taiwan Strait should be maintained, we should also be aware that it is China that is challenging to change the status quo," the vice president concluded.
