President Chen Rallies Fellow Tainan Townspeople
2006-08-19

President Chen Shui-bian reiterated the importance of adherence by himself and his administration to "Two Directions, Four Objectives, and Three Campaigns" when he addressed a big meeting of the Tainan Association on August 19 in Taipei.

According to President Chen, "Two Directions" have to do with "insistence on Taiwan Consciousness" and "carrying out of social justice." The "Four Objectives" are "to increase investment in Taiwan, create employment opportunities, narrow the gap between the rural and urban areas, and bridge the disparity between the rich and the poor." The "Three Campaigns" are to apply for United Nations membership under the name of "Taiwan," to promote the birth of Taiwan's new Constitution-- one that is timely, relevant and viable-- and to recover political party properties which were unjustly acquired and to return them to the people of Taiwan.

He said that by adhering to the "Two Directions, Four Objectives, and Three Campaigns," he will be able to fearlessly "do the right things and walk on the right path." He also invited his townspeople who share the same goals to move forward with him and he expressed the hope that by doing so, everyone will give him greater courage, strength, and wisdom.

He also announced that despite the current domestic political turmoil, he, together with six leaders of Taiwan's diplomatic allies, will attend the first Taiwan-South Pacific Countries leaders' summit in early September.

In conclusion, he strongly appealed to all Taiwan citizens to cherish Taiwan and defend its sovereignty, security, democracy, freedom, and rule of law.
