Vice President Lu Attends "Go Go Go Forum on Industrial Development"
2006-08-20

Vice President Annette Lu cited a report made by the Democratic Progressive Party as saying that of the people of Taiwan, 52% think Taiwan's investment in China "overly hot," 65% regard the investment as a negative impact on Taiwan's economy, and 76% conceive the investment as the major cause to Taiwan's unemployment situation.

She reported the data when speaking at the "Go Go Go Forum on Industrial Development" on August 20 in Hualien County, calling on Taiwan's entrepreneurs not to place all their bets in China but to walk out to the world and use Taiwan as the base.

She also presented her "HBC" idea in regard to cross-strait tourism, suggesting that H (Health and Happiness), B (Beauty, referring to the linkage of health tourism, biotech, and beauty industry), and C (Culture of Taiwan) be the niches Taiwan should make good of when providing services to tourists from China.

As to the fact that Taiwan's fruit are fetching US$2.24 per kilogram in the United States and only $0.54 per kilogram in China, she said that with its high quality, Taiwan's fruit industry will be able to profit from Euro-America markets if packaging is quick and handling and delivery processes safe and sanitary.

In conclusion, commenting on Taiwan's current political turmoil, she said she believed that the constitutional order is the final arbitrator on this matter, and she hoped that all political parties could compete on a rational basis.
