President Chen Returns to Taiwan

Finishing visits to the Republic of Palau and the Republic of Nauru, President Chen Shui-bian arrived at Sungshan Air Base at 10:40 p.m on September 6. After a welcome-home ceremony, President Chen made a speech to summarize the achievements.

President Chen said this is the first time ever that the president of the Republic of China (Taiwan) took Air Force One for a state visit and set foot on the land of Nauru. In the 1st Taiwan-Pacific Allies Summit, heads of state had a chance to get together and discuss how to strengthen the oceanic democratic alliances and realize comprehensive partnerships. The Palau Declaration made by the participating countries announced that these countries would closely cooperate on three fields and eight projects.

President Chen said that in the face of such a difficult diplomatic situation, all the citizens should unite together to guard their dignity and right to participate in the international community.

As to the dispute in domestic politics, President Chen said Taiwan is a country that fully respects freedom of speech, freedom of the press and freedom of assembly, but all actions have to abide by the rule of law and the constitution. 

Vice President Annette Lu, Legislative Yuan President Wang Jin-pyng, National Security Council Secretary-General Chiou I-jen, Secretary-General to the President Mark Chen, Premier Su Tseng-Chang and Cabinet members attended the welcome-home ceremony.
