President Chen Shui-bian extended his welcome to Eamon Courtenay, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade of Belize, and his wife on October 25.
In the meeting, President Chen showed his appreciation to Minister Courtenay for speaking out for Taiwan's bid to join the UN in the UN session on September 26. He also thanked Minister Courtenay for showing his firm support for Taiwan by strongly opposing the proposals concerning the Caribbean Community's relationship with China at an informal meeting of the Community on September 25.
Starting from January 2007, Belize will chair the Central American Integration System (SICA) and the Council for Foreign and Community Relations of the Caribbean Community. Therefore, President Chen expressed his hope that Belize would help Taiwan build up close relations and friendship with other Caribbean countries.
