President Chen Meets with Malawi Foreign Minister.
On November 23rd, President Chen Shui-bian met with Joyce Hilda Banda, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Republic of Malawi, and her husband, Richard. A. Banda, expressing his utmost welcome and thanks.

Praising Minister Banda as the most distinguished woman and politician in the Republic of Malawi, President Chen said that her outstanding achievements in academics and politics have won her the support of the Malawian people and the recognition from President Bingu wa Mutharika.

President Chen indicated that this year marks the 40th anniversary of both Malawi's independence and the estabilishment of its diplomatic relations with Taiwan. He said he was glad that Foreign Minister James Huang could visit Malawi to attend its Independence Day celebrations on his behalf.

Speaking of strengthening the friendship and cooperation between the two countries, President Chen asssured his guest of Taiwan's commitment to the economic development and national securiy of Malawi, citing Taiwan's donations of helicopters, patrol boats, locomotives and financial aid for the new parliamentary building. He also expressed his hope to attend in person the first summit between Taiwan and its African allies in Malawi next year.
