On December 11th, President Chen Shui-bian met with Parliament Speaker Kamuta Latasi of Tuvalu, expressing wholehearted welcome and thanks for his attending the Democratic Pacific Union's International Symposium on Democracy and Congress, which was initiated by Vice President Annette Lu.
As Prime Minister Apisai Ielemia of Tuvalu was also in Taiwan for a state visit, President Chen said this represents the amiable relationship between the two countries. He also recalled his trip to Tuvalu in May 2005, saying that he was very honored and proud to be the first ROC (Taiwan) president to visit the beautiful nation, and that his visit signifies the great importance and respect he attaches to Tuvalu.
President Chen praised Speaker Latasi as an influential and experienced statesman, who has held several high positions such as Prime Minister from 1993 to 1996 and has become a member of the Parliament since 1999. He asked Speaker Latasi to convey his appreciation to other Members of the Tuvalu Parliament, and said that he looked forward to their continued support for Taiwan.
President Chen also took the opportunity to thank Tuvalu for speaking out for Taiwan in the international community and supporting its bid to participate in the UN and WHO.
